Position Summary
The Service Line Leader, Oncology is an integral and significant contributor to the Saint Agnes Medical Center (SAMC) Leadership Team. The Service Line Leader is responsible for the leadership, development and performance of the oncology service line strategic objectives and vision. This individual is accountable for clinical, financial, and vital business development strategies that will encompass plans for growth of cancer services, in addition to building physician relationships, patient experience, and specialized/focused care. The Service Line Leader, Oncology will directly oversee the development and marketing of a comprehensive cancer program in conjunction with the c-Care Physician Network partnership. This role will work closely with the Vice President, Ambulatory Services & Network Development and Finance Leadership to analyze market profiles such as demographics, competitors, benchmarking, and use rates utilizing this information to develop comprehensive strategies and business/financial plans. This position is actively involved with strategic and tactical levels in the assessment, negotiation and execution of joint ventures/acquisitions in partnership with other key executives and physician partners.

Key Responsibilities:
• Conduct thorough analyses and develop strategies, methodologies, and effective relationships to grow, and integrate the service line core services throughout the facility and market.
• Develop an appropriate continuum of care for the service line that coordinates care throughout the facility that includes inpatient, outpatient and outreach opportunities. Create the programmatic template that can be replicated as needed to cohesively bring together a comprehensive cancer service line.
• Create strategies to address marketing materials and promotion of the service. Coordinate service recovery to dissatisfied customers.
• Provide visionary thinking and articulate the vision for the oncology service line and organization. Cultivate appropriate business relationships with physicians and vendors to grow the service line.
• Ensure the building of trusting, collegial, collaborative relationships between staff, peers, physicians, other disciplines and ancillary services, vendors, community leaders, legislators, and nursing education programs to ensure quality patient care and a positive work environment.
• Participate in appropriate hospital-based and community based committees. Provide consultation to community and business leaders regarding the healthcare delivery system and specifically     the oncology service line. Provide leadership as appropriate.
• Collaborate with physicians to plan for the need for capital equipment and patient care processes for the services based on strategic initiatives.

• Embrace a culture of Safety by ensuring and encouraging a non-punitive reporting environment and “Just Culture” for reporting unsafe practices, allocating staff to participate in safety surveys, ensuring improvements are incorporated into daily practice of staff, and identifying areas of risk and liability.

Goals and Objectives:
• Earn the trust and establish credibility among the medical staff active in the Oncology Service Line, referring physicians, and key leadership within St. Agnes Medical Center. Become known as the champion for the integration and growth of the Saint Agnes Oncology Service Line.

• SAMC has a unique partnership with c-Care and it is important that the Service Line Leader establish strong relationships with the medical staff and leadership of that group. In addition, the Service Line Leader should work with c-Care to develop key growth priorities for the service line.

• Complete an extensive review of the SAMC Oncology Service Line along with the needs of the region from a cancer treatment perspective. Identify the strengths of the program to build upon as well as the gaps and weaknesses that will need to be addressed.

Education/Certifications:
• A Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, healthcare administration, clinical or a related field; a Master’s degree, an MBA/MHA or related Master’s degree is required.

Knowledge and Work Experience
• Demonstrated leadership and communication skills with the ability to influence, collaborate with, and motivate others.
• Oncology background with strong strategic planning, financial management, and business skills.
• At least five years of experience in developing, overseeing or interacting with physician groups, product lines, or business development activities in a healthcare delivery system.
• Participate in appropriate hospital-based and community based committees. Provide consultation to community and business leaders regarding the healthcare delivery system and specifically the oncology service line. Provide leadership as appropriate.
• Collaborate with physicians to plan for the need for capital equipment and patient care processes for the services based on strategic initiatives.

• Knowledge and experience in any service line management discipline with development for growth. Experience in Oncology/Cancer Services is essential.
• Experience in a marketplace that is highly competitive with multiple hospitals and/or ambulatory care facilities.
• Articulate in creating and presenting information to hospital executive leadership, medical staff, and various external settings.
• Proven track record of developing strategy, detailed implementation plans, and tactical execution.
• Experience working closely and collaborating with physician specialists and subspecialists to drive strategic/business planning and financial and operational performance.

Leadership Skills and Competencies
• Has a high level of ‘personal ownership’ in the future success of the service line and hospital in which they belong. He/she should be a strong advocate for the service line and physicians within        the service line, striving to exceed the clinical quality, customer service and cost performance expectations.
• Has a high energy level with an assertive, straightforward ‘can-do’ style and a good sense of humor.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Follow-through will be vital in this role as well as the ability to strongly and persuasively advocate for the needs of the service line.
• Ability to operate in a complex matrix environment working effectively with local and system teams.
• Must be a strategic visionary, self-starter and action-oriented. Brings a creative approach to problem solving, and the ability to take advantage of emerging opportunities.
• Strong desire and ability to become an active and contributing member of the Fresno community in which Saint Agnes is located and which it serves, to build the community’s connection and commitment to the SAMC Cancer Service Line.
